MilkWorks was founded in 2001 by a group of seven women, including a pediatrician, four nurses, a childbirth educator and a doula.
The founders were all mothers who were concerned about the lack of support services for breastfeeding women in our community. MilkWorks, a non-profit organization, is not owned by, nor affiliated with, any hospital or other agency or organization. However, we work closely with all of them to provide the best care for new families in our community.
Since its founding, MilkWorks has grown in many ways.
What started out as a small support service has grown into the only comprehensive lactation clinic and breastfeeding center in Nebraska. Our Breastfeeding Medicine Specialist and Lactation Consultants provide care to over a thousand women from eastern Nebraska and nearby states each year.
Yet much has not changed.
Our employees are all mothers who have breastfed (or are breastfeeding) their own children. We have little staff turnover, which means that clients are able to develop lasting relationships with our providers. Our protocols are updated frequently, resulting in consistent and accurate information. We pride ourselves in finding out what your unique needs are, so we can provide the type of care and support that YOU need.
It is important that our physical space be welcoming and inclusive.
All of our antique furniture was donated. We have filled our walls with paintings and photographs of parents and babies from next door and around the world. You are welcome to come in, sit down on one of our sofas, and get a sense for who we are and what we do.
On any given day at MilkWorks you will see new moms walking in with their newborns for a consultation, parents dropping in to weigh their babies on one of our digital scales, grandparents stopping by to purchase an adorable baby present, moms buying or renting a breast pump, or dietician students from UNL sitting in on a moms group. We don’t necessarily feel like a clinic, yet our goal is to deliver the highest quality consultation services and the best support programs that we possibly can.
More than anything else, we want to listen to you and find out what your unique needs are.
