Mothers of Many Abilities

One of our clients, Amy Buresh, recently brought my attention to an unfortunate event. A mother, who is blind, was breastfeeding her baby in a Missouri hospital and asked for assistance. The hospital called Child Protective Services and removed the baby from her parents.

It took two months for the National Federation for the Blind and a legal fight to return the baby to her parents. In the meantime, the baby's mother lost her right to breastfeed her baby, something she will never recover.

Amy, who has served on the Board of Directors for the National Federation of the Blind, is one of several mothers who have partial or complete vision impairment that MilkWorks has helped to breastfeed. While it may be hard for many of us to imagine how a mother with different abilities may breastfeed her baby, mothers throughout history have done amazing things!

What have I learned from Amy and other mothers? Believe, respect, be willing to gently ask questions and learn, and never underestimate the power of a mother and her desire to take care of her baby.
